Collegium Pharmaceutical Inc. Receives Notice of Allowance for US Patent for Novel Dosage Form for Combination Products
Cumberland, RI -(BUSINESS WIRE)- September 23, 2004 - Collegium Pharmaceutical, Inc., a development company for specialty pharmaceutical products, today announced that it has received notice of allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) for its patent application "Pharmaceutical Composition for Compressed Annular Tablet with Molded Triturate Tablet for Both Intraoral and Oral Administration", US Patent 10015930. This patented technology trademarked 'MEDI-SAVER™' is a unique dosage form consisting of a tablet triturate molded within an annular tablet providing for both intraoral (e.g. sub-lingual) and subsequent oral administration. It is a two component pharmaceutical composition that allows for the delivery system of one or more drugs in the same dosage form. More specifically, a single dosage form delivers a first drug or dose that is dissolved in the mouth and the second dose or drug is swallowed and delivered to the stomach. The annular tablet oral portion is very versatile in that it can be released immediately or in any form of modified release. In addition to the ability to provide patent protection for a drug combination, Collegium believes that there are numerous additional clinical benefits to this dosage form including increased patient compliance, the potential for faster onset of action, greater efficacy, and lower side effects. There are increasing numbers of combination products that are being developed for a variety of different diseases including chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and CNS- related disorders. The patent is very broad in that it covers multiple drugs including those that treat these diseases. Collegium intends to develop a number of combination products in targeted diseases using this unique dosage form. "This is an important patent in that it has significant commercial potential for a large number of drug combinations especially where rapid onset and avoiding first pass metabolism may be beneficial. With patents expiring on a number of drugs and the large number of combination products in development, this patented 'MEDI-SAVER™'technology presents a unique opportunity. Products developed with this 'MEDI-SAVER™' technology may also offer many important clinical advantages" said Jane Hirsh, Chairman, Collegium Pharmaceutical and one of the inventors of the technology.
